Storm Damage: A Look At What Storms Can Do To Your Property

6/9/2016 (Permalink)

Many Types of Storms Can Damage Your Property

Unfortunately, storm damage usually occurs with little to no warning. From a tornado's destructive winds tearing the siding off your home to hail battering your roof, storms can cause extensive damage. To help you better understand what you may face after a storm has passed through the area, here is a look at the different types of damage caused by the storms that most commonly occur in middle Tennessee.

Tornadoes

Thanks to their ability to form in a matter of minutes, tornadoes are extremely unpredictable and have the potential to wreak havoc on anything in their path. With wind speeds reaching to as much as 200 mph, they can tear shingles off roofing and siding off sheathing without any difficulty. Also, homes may be storm damaged in Nashville by flying debris, uprooted trees, basketball goals, and even cars. When a tornado hits, no part of your property is immune to potential harm, which is why it is so important to inspect your home thoroughly once the area has been declared safe.

Thunderstorms

There are many components of a thunderstorm that leave your home at risk for injury. For example, the high winds can cause problems like those discussed above. Lightning associated with the storm can strike your property and enter the wiring, which can leave any plugged-in electrical appliances ruined. Lightning also can spark fires, which have the potential to cause extensive storm damage if not quickly controlled. Finally, hail can easily cause holes in your roof and siding of your home while also bending or denting gutters. In some cases, hail may even cause windows to shatter.

Heavy Rains

Whether rain accompanies a tornado or thunderstorm or is alone, it is also a cause for concern, though it doesn't usually cause structural damage on its own. However, if your walls or roof have any gaps, the water can easily enter your home causing water damage, which has the potential to result in mold growth if not treated properly. Excessive amounts of rain can also cause rain gutters to become overloaded, leaving the rain with no other place to go but directly to the ground, where it can pool and damage the foundation. Of course, flooding can also be a significant problem.

Snow / Ice

While Nashville isn't known for getting significant amounts of snow, it is still a possibility, as is ice. When snow or ice accumulates on your roof, it can put a substantial strain on the physical support systems, causing holes or buckling. Also, snow or ice that may form on an overhanging tree branch can fall onto your home. Heavy snow and ice also have the potential to cause gutters to bend and break.
